I have declared war on aphids!
They have been increasing in number since that first time I saw them… After I’d picked them off, I had a hope that they would get discouraged and go away. But alas, they have proliferated*. Two Mondays I went after them with tweezers (it was very satisfying [...]

Thankful… Friday?

I’m a bit late this week… but better late than no post!
This week I am thankful:
* for the rain (and the fabulous thunderstorms) and the extra bonus of not having to water my plants every day
* that hand-pollination is working and I have hope that the cucumbers will grow up to be eatable
* for [...]
Garden oddity

Just for kicks, here’s a picture of what looks to be a double cucumber. It has two flowers at the end (and yes, the red tie means that they were both pollinated by me). I’m looking forward to seeing how this one grows up!
On the systematization of cucumbers

Nerd (and organizer, and borderline obsessive) that I am, I feel the need to really keep track of my cucumbers. No more shrivelers! So I have come up with a system. I needed a way to keep track of where all the unfertilized cucumber babies are so that when they bloom, they [...]

I’m again thankful for God’s sovereignty this week. He knows exactly where His children will go and when His children will go there. Acts 17:26-27
I’m also thankful for great friends and lunch plans to see them!
Shriveling cucumbers

So I’m having a bit of a problem with my cucumbers. The vines are growing nicely, I think, and the plants are flowering like crazy. And every so often I find a tiny new cucumber starting. The problem is that a few days later, I’ll look for that little cucumber and find [...]
Belated Thankful Thursday

I am thankful that our God is sovereign and knows exactly the best plan for us. I am thankful that even when little detail problems start piling up and looking not-so-little anymore, He is in control and knows why everything happens the way it does– even if we don’t… and we don’t need to. What [...]
Another garden update

It seems like the plants just went crazy when we were gone for a week! They are so much bigger than they were before we left:
Even more exciting is that the tomatoes have started producing fruit. I haven’t counted it (that’s for later, when it ripens yes, i am that compulsive…), but I [...]
There is a (real) post coming…

We’re back from our vacation and the plants are bigger and better than ever… And we have tomatoes growing! I’ve been insanely busy (we hit the ground running when our plane landed!) but things should taper off after today or tomorrow. So there’s another big update post coming. With pictures, of course.

Just a quick note…

This is more to remind myself than anything… but last Saturday morning (02 June) I watered my peppers with 1 tsp of epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) added to the water container (I’ll have to look up the size of that container…). Apparently this gives the peppers an additional nutrient boost when they are flowering [...]
