This was literally a spur-of-the moment project! I’m so glad that I had a tiny bit of time reallocate to make these “running slippers” for my daughter.
My little (~2-year old) girl LOVES to run around our house. We try to make sure that she wears socks with grips on their soles, but sometimes the grippies just don’t keep up with her speed (she is fast!). The “loop” she likes to run takes her from the kitchen, through the carpeted dining room, and down the front hall to the kitchen again. Recently she has been slipping more often on the wood floors, which make up about 2/3 of her normal route. On the day I made these slippers, she fell just before her nap and cut her lip. It was so sad to see her going from a completely happy little girl to crying in pain. Thankfully, eating an ice cube while watching a few minutes of Daniel Striped Tiger seemed to help. As I sat with her on my lap, I resolved that I was finally going to do something so that she had non-slip shoes to wear in the house. So as soon as she was in her bed for her nap, I got to work.
I enlarged the fantastic Stardust baby shoes pattern (that I’ve used so many times!!) to toddler-size by printing the pattern pieces at 115% and using 10.5″ of elastic. The other change that I made was to use the rubberized drawer/cabinet liner material for the outer soles of the shoes. I used this material for V’s Tinker Bell shoes, and it worked wonderfully. However, those little green shoes (made from a different pattern) were basically too small as soon as I made them and a little bit impractical, as well. Since I’ve made the Stardust pattern so many times, it took me just under an hour and a half from figuring out how to enlarge the pattern to a completed pair of shoes 🙂 That’s my kind of project– I still had time for a snack before she woke up from her nap!
For fun, I added some zebra-striped flowers attached to safety pins to the tops of the shoes. If the shoes need to be washed, I simply unpin the flowers and toss the shoes into the washing machine!
My little girl put on her shoes immediately after her nap and didn’t take them off all evening! I think she likes them 🙂
