I have a clean-and-simple aqua and white layout to share with you all.

While there was plenty of bright color and sparkle in the August kit, there were some lovely soft shades, too.  Aqua is one of my favorite colors recently, and when I saw the Bo Bunny polka dot and the Dear Lizzy floral together, I knew I had to feature them on a layout.  I stitched along the edges of the polka dot with a zigzag, and added a straight stitched border to the floral.  Add that soft, velvety ribbon, and things were just about perfect!

I wrote my journaling along the vertical so that it wouldn’t compete too much with the design, and I added pearls from my stash and some butterflies die cut from vellum.  The butterflies are “symbolic” of the freedom I felt when I finally deposited my PhD dissertation!

Supplies:

from the August kit “Summer Shimmer”:
patterned paper: American Crafts Dear Lizzy (Enchanted Elated Iris), Bo Bunny Petal Pushers
trim: American Crafts Dear Lizzy Spring Lovely Ribbons

others:
white cardstock The Paper Company
vellum: The Paper Studio
pearls: Queen & Co.
Silhouette SD: butterfly die cut, font HoneyScript
journaling pen: GelWriter
foam adhesive: Therm O Web
sewing machine stitching

I’ve been working my way through my end-of-grad-school photos and came across this one. There isn’t a huge story to go with it, and there aren’t any other photos to go with it, but I wanted to make sure that it was included in my scrapbook.  So I decided to have this page do double-duty.

As I was working on other layouts with the August Lucky Girls kit, I had the photo on my table.  As I shifted things around, it landed with the flowers and the ruffled paper strip (originally made for a different layout, but I had decided it was a bit much for that one), and I realized how perfectly they went together. So the first “duty” of this page was to highlight this photo and mention that I’d won this award– one that I’d been aiming for throughout grad school.

The layout itself probably looks pretty lumpy-bumpy… and that’s because if you undo the closures that I made with big brads and embroidery floss…

…the brown flap opens to hold the cards and some other papers from my PhD defense that I wanted to keep: the second “duty” of this layout.

The whole yellow section is a big pocket.  I folded 1/2-inch paper strips lengthwise and attached them around the top, right, and bottom edges to make a gusset to accommodate the extra bulk from the things I put inside.

Supplies:

from the August kit “Summer Shimmer”:
patterned paper: Echo Park Country Drive (Picket Fence/Dandelion), SEI Sunny Day (Window Box)
embellishments: Petaloo FloraDoodles Chantilly Mixed Bloom (Sienna), Petaloo Canterbury Assorted Mini Bloom (Lemon), SEI Sunny Day Glitter Die Cut Accents

others:
additional cardstock: Paper Reflections, The Paper Company
alphas: Prima Flocked Alphabets (from the Sept. 2010 kit)
border punch: Fiskars (Apron Lace)
brads: the Paper Studio
journaling pen: GelWriter
embroidery floss

This layout actually tells two stories.   You see the first one immediately…

My officemates through grad school were awesome.  I might have gotten through without them, but it’s debatable, haha!  The three of us all defended at the end of the same summer, and we took this picture right before I “moved out” of the office.

I wanted yellow letters for the title, but I didn’t have quite the right golden-y color that went with the floral paper.  But I did have the bright, glittery, lemon-y Pink Paislee Sweetness letters from a previous LGC kit.  I took my red pigment ink and using a foam blender tool, I added just enough to change the color.  It’s a bit mottled, but that exactly what I wanted to go with the patterned paper.

The second story is on a pull-out insert behind the main photo.  These are the “nameplates” I had for my offices throughout my time in grad school.  They have a great story (I think), but they’re really ugly, so I hid them in the pocket.

The story is on the back of the insert…

Supplies:

from the August kit “Summer Shimmer”:
patterned paper: SEI Sunny Day (Window Box)
cardstock: American Crafts Dear Lizzy Enchanted (Elated Iris; B-side solid), Echo Park Country Drive (Picket Fence/Dandelion)
trim: American Crafts Dear Lizzy Spring Lovely Ribbons

others:
alphas: Pink Paislee Sweetness (glitter sticker alphabet, from the May kit)
border punch: Fiskars (apron Lace)
photo corners: Scrapbook Adhesives
additional cardstock for pull-out tag: Paper Reflections
journaling pen: Sharpie Ultra Fine Point
staples
sewing machine stitching
red pigment stamping ink (to add a tint to the alphas)

I have to admit, while I was super excited to see a Glimmer Mist included in this month’s kit, I was also a bit nervous.  You see, I haven’t done much misting!  But I decided to embrace the challenge and use the mist as the main feature — for my titlework — on this layout.

I got out a piece of scrap cardstock that was the same color as the background paper I used and laid out my letters (from my stash).  I experimented with the way my mist sprayed so that I was confident I could create the look I was going for, and then I went for it on the actual background paper!  To finish off the title, I cut my second word with my Silhouette from patterned paper in the kit and placed it right across the misted word.

I added little strips of patterned paper to accent the photos and on the edge of the layout… and I punched hearts from the patterned papers and my practice-misted paper to sprinkle across the pages.

And there are two more photos tucked behind the vertical panel of photos!  I couldn’t not include them, so I adhered one each to the front and back of a tag and slipped it in, with baker’s twine from the June kit as a pull tab.

Supplies:

from the August kit “Summer Shimmer”:
patterned paper: SEI Sunny Day (Window Box), Echo Park Country Drive (Flutter By), Bo Bunny (Petal Pushers)
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist (Viva Pink)

others:
baker’s twine: My Mind’s Eye Lime Twist Happy Go Lucky Together; from the June kit!)
cardstock: The Paper Company
letters (for masking): Maya Road Sheer Alphabet (Atlanta Uppercase)
Silhouette SD with font Wendy Medium
border punch: Fiskars (Apron Lace)
heart punch: McGill
gel pen: GelWriter
sewing machine stitching

It’s party time!!  Head on over to the Lucky Girls blog to join in the fun!

~ ~ ~

This month for the blog party, all the Lucky Girls chose their five favorites from the August kit to use on a project.

It was hard to pick, but I used these five …

{Glimmer Mist, Mini Masks, glittery & gem brads, sparkly flowers, and the teal polka dot side of the Bo Bunny paper}

…to make this layout:

The masks are so easy to use, since they cling to the paper!!  (This video is awesome for more ideas.)  I placed the masks, and then added scrap paper to mark out the area where my photos and journaling would go.  That pink shimmer mist is so pretty on top of my kraft cardstock.

After misting, I decided that the photo/journaling area needed a bit more definition, so I used a gel pen that matched the teal of the polka dot paper to freehand a line+dots around the edge.  After the title and journaling were added, I glitzed up the layout even more with the sparkly flowers and brads.  Perfect!

Supplies:

from the August kit “Summer Shimmer”:
patterned paper: Bo Bunny Petal Pushers
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist (Viva Pink)
Tim Holtz Idea-ology Mask Mini Florets
Petaloo FloraDoodles Chantilly (Mixed Bloom in Blue, Velvet Hydrangeas in Rose)
SEI Happy Day Designer Brads

others:
cardstock: Recollections
alphas: DCWV Mariposa epoxy alphabet stickers (from the March Lucky Girls kit)
gel pen: GelWriter
journaling pen: Sharpie Ultra Fine Point
